Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Diagnostic Scanning

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Diagnostic Scanning is used as part of the physiotherapy assessment and treatment allows accurate diagnosis of joint and soft tissue problems as well as helps with rehabilitation through biofeedback and ultrasound-guided steroid injection.

Your physiotherapist may recommend having an ultrasound scan if they think that you may benefit from one to achieve a clear diagnosis. If you feel that an ultrasound scan could help you to learn more about your problem, then speak to your physiotherapist or the reception team.

How does point of care musculoskeletal ultrasound help my problem?

A Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Diagnostic scan helps to view the following structures and helps to identify abnormalities that help your physiotherapist target the management accurately.

  • Tendon - tendinitis, tendon tears, and tendinopathy (swelling and scarring of the tendon).

  • Muscle - muscle tears, injury or scarring of muscles, loss of muscle bulk.

  • Nerve – injuries to nerves, compression of the nerve (e.g., carpal tunnel syndrome).

  • Joints – inflammation of joint due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout.

  • Ligament – sprains, and tears through trauma.

  • Bones – stress fractures.

Steroid injection therapy

Diagnostic Ultrasound helps to target the tissues accurately by guiding the needle. It also helps to carry out procedures like hydro-distension for frozen shoulder and high-volume injections for Achilles and patellar tendinopathy.

Are there any reasons that I shouldn’t have an ultrasound?

Ultrasound does not have radiation like x-rays or doesn’t use magnets like MRI scans. So, it is very safe to use and there are no restrictions to its use.
